Chicago Cultural Center

A true gem of Chicago architecture – both inside and out - the Chicago Cultural Center features a highly visible green roof with plant selections that provide four-season interest and active bee hives. Solar panels on the roof screen select mechanical elements from the view of neighboring residents and supply supplemental hot water to the building’s restrooms. The challenge of adding the weight of a living roof to the 1897 structure required an innovative support solution that consisted of post-tensioning each existing truss with a system of cables and king posts while protecting the elaborate interior finishes. The roof is a great example of the City of Chicago’s commitment to sustainable architecture.
