The third Freedom’s Path affordable housing project at Hines, Illinois provides 28 rental apartments for veterans.  The three-story, Georgian-style masonry structure is a contributing feature of the Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Administration Hospital Historic District.

The adaptive reuse design encompasses an extensive exterior and interior renovation including restoration of the building’s historic dormers, masonry repairs, repair or replacement of windows and exterior doors, repair of the building’s porches and canopies, and ADA site improvements including parking spaces, an accessible path and exterior ramp.  Work on the interior includes modification of the original 40 officer barrack rooms into 28 single-occupancy apartments. Building amenities include a common living lounge, kitchen, computer room, fitness center, and laundry room, as well as renovated corridors and stairway and new interior finishes. A new individually controlled HVAC system and new plumbing connections were also installed.
