Designed in 1866 by William Boyington, the Chicago Water Tower survived the great fire of 1873 to become the iconic symbol of the City’s defiant spirit. Fully restored as one of the firm’s most recognizable projects, the work included the re-illumination of the tower’s castellated gothic style. The challenge of cleaning the locally sourced Joliet Lemont Limestone was met by the development of an innovative grid of 300 low pressure water jets designed to gently mist the surface at two minute intervals during an eight hour period. The technology now provides a low-impact solution for future restorations that will help preserve this landmark and others for generations to come.
